Lesson 17

Prepositions for time

We are looking into prepositions for time. As always, we are bringing you the little more tricky ones … First of all our favourite:
Vi ska gå på bio (nu) på lördag! = We are going to the movies this Saturday! ”På lördag” means the Saturday that is closest to the time of speaking… If it is Tuesday today, then all the days till next Monday get the preposition ”på”. And the days after that:
Vi åker till Stockholm nästa onsdag. – Well, if today is Wednesday, then we will be on our way to Stockholm in a week from today.
If it is another day of the week, then we are going to Stockholm in a week and a few days, meaning, on the Wednesday a week from the closest Wednesday to today. A day even later gets a longer description:
Om tre veckor vill jag vara klar med renoveringen. = I want the renovations to be finished in three weeks. And of course, you could use the date, too! Den 15:e juli åker vi! = We leave on the 15th of July! / We are leaving on the 15th of July!

We talk about the past like this:
Jag tvättade bilen i onsdags. = I washed the car last Wednesday. That is, on the Wednesday that was closest to today in the past – the Wednesday within a week from today in the past. Please, remember the ”-s” at the end of the name of the day in this phrase!
Earlier than that:
Vi träffades förra lördagen. Just like above, in expressing future, this one means the Saturday that is at least one week ago – the Saturday before the closest Saturday in the past.
And even before that:
Vi var på en mycket trevlig bröllopsfest för tre veckor sedan. (We can even say and hear it as ”för tre veckor sen”.) = We attended a nice wedding three weeks ago.
