Lesson 22
“Fake passive”

They are called “fake-passive” because they have an “-s” ending, but they are not passive forms. They are also called “the s-verbs”. They have some other names in linguistics, but these are more descriptive. The verb “finns” that we have already learnt about belongs to this group. And I think you will recognise some more that you already know. One of the “s-verb” groups includes the verbs that have this as their original form – meaning, that we are not adding an “s” to some verb, but these always stand like this. Some of the most frecuently used ones:
Att andas = to breathe
Andas! = Breathe! Jag / du / han … andas = I am / you are … breathing;
I / you … breathe… Jag / du / han … andades = I was / you were … breathing;
I / you … breathed…Jag / du / han … har andats = I / you … have breathed
Andas lugnt! = Breathe calmly!
Att hoppas = to hope
Hoppas! Jag/du/han … hoppas, hoppades, har hoppats
Jag hoppas att du har haft en skön semester! = I hope that you have had a nice vacation! Att lyckas = to succeed / to manage Lyckas! Jag/du/han … lyckas, lyckades, har lyckats Jag hoppas att ni lyckas med husförsäljningen! = I hope that you manage to sell the house (that the house-sale will be successful)
Att minnas = to remember
Minns! Jag/du/han … minns, minndes,
Jag minns inte vad du sa om denna film. = I do not remember what you said about this film.
Att kännas = something feels a certain way— (it does not have an imperative form, as we cannot order someone to feel something)
jag/du/han/hon/det känns, kändes, har känts
Det känns riktigt bra att vara klar med detta projekt! = It feels really good to be done/finished with this project.
Hur känns det att bli farmor snart? = How does it feel to become a grandma soon?
The other group of these verbs are actually created from another verb by adding an s to the end. By doing so, we change the meaning of the verb.
träffa → träffas
Jag träffar Olle nästan varje dag. = I meet Olle almost every day.
Vad trevligt! Vi har inte träffats på flera veckor. = That’s nice! We have not met for weeks.
Krama → kramas
Jag kramade Britt, men hon sa att hon inte tycker om att kramas. = I hugged Britt, but she said she did not like hugging.
So you can see that if we say who we have met or who we have hugged, that is, if there is a direct object belonging to the verb, then we use the verb without the “-s”. If we want to say “we met each other” or “hugged each other” – even if we do not actually say “each other” in English, but it is understood – then we add the “-s” to the end of the verb. That little “-s” ending means “each other”. Fiffigt, va? = Smart, isn’t it? There are other verbs like this:
De brottas hela tiden! = They wrestle all the time.
Vi kysstes i mörkret. = We kissed in the the dark.
De pussas varje gång de träffas. = The kiss (on the cheek) every time they meet.
Vi ses imorgon! = See you tomorrow! (We see each other tomorrow!)
Vi hörs nästa vecka! = We’ll get in touch next week!
There is a third group of these: the verbs expressing agressive actions generally speaking (without a direct object.)
Ni får inte slåss! = You must not fight (hit each other.)
Han sparkas när han blir arg. = He kicks when he gets angry.
Andas lugnt!
