Road signs

It can be very confusing to be in a foreign country when you do not understand the signs in the streets. It is vital that you know if there is a parking fee or not when you need to park your car, for example. Enjoy the lesson!

Avgift

You have to pay a parking fee - “avgift” means “fee” in all kinds of context. Sometimes you will see it as “avgiftsbelagd”. The point is that you will have to pay. Except if it is in the word “avgiftsfri” - which means free from a fee 🙂

Parking for residents. - Do not park in these spaces, if you do not live there. If you do, you still have to register and get a permit before using these spaces.

Reserved (rented) spaces. Again, permit is needed.

Parking for visitors, max 4 hours. As the word “avgift,” is not there, you can park for free during these 4 hours.

Gäller ej fordon med tillstånd.

Whatever the sign above this forbids, this sign makes it OK for vehicles with a permit (tillstånd) to do that thing anyway. Word-by-word it means “Not valid for vehicles with permit.”

Tillstånd måste erhållas.

Permit must be had.

Tillträde endast för behöriga.

Entry only for those with a permit.

Obehöriga äga ej tillträde.

Those without a permit may not enter. “äga tillträde” = own entry

Privat område. Genomfartstrafik förbjuden.

Privately owned land. Car travel forbidden.

Nödutgång. Får ej blockeras.

Emergency exit. Do not obstruct.

Branddörr. Skall hållas stängd.

Fire door. Keep closed.

Skyddsskor måste användas.

Drive carefully! Children are playing in the area.

Vägen avstängd.

The road is closed.
